POLICIES

Please keep in mind that some of this information has changed due to new, enhanced COVID-19 protocols. Please see our page on COVID-19, and reach out with any questions!

RUNNING LATE

Each service is scheduled with a set time (usually 30 minutes) in order to provide a quality service. In an effort to guarantee that each client receives their quality time, we may need to reschedule your appointment if you arrive more than 10 minutes late. We will always try to accommodate when possible and this is easiest to do if you can give us a heads up with a realistic estimate of how late you’ll be.

Cancellations

Your time is precious to us, our time holds the same value. Please keep in mind that last minute cancellations, lateness or worse, “no shows” really affect our schedules as well as that of the guest booked after you. We require any rescheduling or cancellations be made at least 4 hours prior to your appointment. We understand that accidents happen but after your first offense, we will require a credit card and 50% deposit to book any further services. This will keep our schedule running smoothly. Thank you!

*This cancellation policy is currently flexible if there is any health concern in the reason for cancelling. Please let us know.

Kids

We love hanging with kids, and so does our shop dog Marty! We ask, however, that you not leave your young children unattended while you get your haircut. Either bring another adult to supervise, or leave the kiddo at home.

You may have noticed that we haven’t included a selection for “Kid’s Cuts” in our services menu. This is because, while we will happily cut children’s hair, we don’t have a discounted price for them. Painting the Mona Lisa on a tiny canvas didn’t make painting it any easier, especially if the canvas wouldn’t sit still! We do have a booster seat and a child sized cape ready to go!

Please reach out to us if your child has any special needs that we can accommodate. We have a few sensory objects that can sometimes be helpful and we’re happy to customize the service to make it a positive experience for you and your child.

*While we are practicing our heightened protocols, we are only allowing children who have appointments in and accompanied by one adult.

dogs

We love dogs! In fact, we love dogs so much that we have a shop dog, Marty, who hangs out often. We’d love to get a visit from your dog, but we ask that you only bring them in if they are well behaved, quiet, and friendly with humans, children and other dogs.

*In light of COVID-19, we’ve made the tough decision to leave our shop pups at home (furloughed, if you will) Please do the same, this helps reduce contact points between staff and clients. Service animals, of course, always welcome.

Hair Length

We specialize in short hair at Cowlick, but don’t underestimate our skills at longer lengths! We consider short hair to be off the neck and/or over the ears. Medium hair is hair that is still off the shoulders but isn’t tight around the ears or off the neck. Long hair is anything below the shoulders. While we don’t want you leaving with sopping wet hair, a long or medium haircut only includes a rough blow dry. This means that if you tend to style your hair with a blowout or hot tools, or are looking for a haircut that needs to be styled with hot tools to finish with precision, we are probably not the best spot for you. We’re happy to refer you to some awesome inclusive hair shops that do a wider range of long hair styles. If you like your longer lengths with natural texture intact, book on, dear friends! If you have any questions about which service to book, feel free to reach out by calling 917-909-0402 or by emailing [email protected]

non-Gendered pricing

We believe that haircuts have no gender. Because of this, we charge based on length of hair and complexity of haircut, never on gender. We know that certain shapes can have deep semiotic meaning dependent on our culture and we understand the nuances of what makes a haircut come across as more feminine or masculine in our time and place and we assure you, it has nothing to do with length. We also believe that anyone can have any haircut (ignore all that B.S. about “face shape”) if the haircut is given with care and intention and a thoughtful eye toward hair texture, growth patterns and lifestyle of the person wearing it. Please feel free to talk to us about what you’re trying to signal to yourself or the world with your haircut, we can probably help!

Pronouns

It is important to us to respect everyone that comes through our door. The beauty and grooming industry is still extremely gendered and we know that many genderqueer folks have had difficulty, discomfort or even traumatic experiences getting their haircut in the past. We have chosen a booking system that has a “non-binary” gender option. While we know this still doesn’t cover everyone, we encourage you to add a note to your appointment with your pronouns and/or preferred name. We will do our best to not make assumptions about your identity, experience or pronouns and we ask that you do the same for other guests and for our staff. If you have no idea what this is all about, we encourage you to educate yourself.

Apprentice services

We often have an apprentice on staff. All of our apprentices are overseen by a licensed, master barber. Apprentice haircuts range in price from free to full price and range in time from 30 min to an hour and a half depending on the level of the apprentice and the complexity of the haircut. Free haircuts are booked directly through the beginner apprentice. Discounted haircuts by advanced apprentices are booked by selecting the “Apprentice Haircut” on our booking page. The price of the Apprentice haircut is related to their level of apprenticeship experience as approved by the overseeing Master Barber. Feel free to call or email us for apprentice contact information.

Accessibility

We have tried our hardest to make our space welcoming to all, however, with limitations due to the old building we occupy, we have been unable to make some changes required to truly make our space accessible to those with differences in mobility. We have a short, steep ramp into our space, which may be difficult for some wheelchair users to ascend without assistance. Additionally, our bathroom has a narrow door that is also, sadly, not accessible to those in wheelchairs. Aside from these two obstacles, we have tried to keep the space, bright, clean, and free of other obstructions. Our hair cutting chairs have a cushioned 18” inside arm width and there are 3/4” soft mats surrounding the chairs.

If you have any concerns, please email us at [email protected] and we will do everything within our power to make sure you are able to receive an excellent hair cutting experience.

We are available for scheduling home visits for those who might have difficulty with our space. Reach out to [email protected] for more information about this service.

FEEDBACK

If you have any projects or events that are queer, community, or social justice centered that we can support or host, let us know!

We encourage feedback. If you notice anything that we could improve on, or any ways we can be more inclusive, please share with us! We are always striving to learn and grow and can’t do that without open criticism. If we as a business, or any of our staff do or say anything offensive, please let us know. Call us out, call us in, do what you need to do.

Our email is always open to you! [email protected]
